Lightning Storm Over Okeechobee Lake at Port Mayaca

Oct 4, 2011 | Lightning & Storms

There was a crucial lesson that I learned during this lightning storm chase. Obviously playing with lightning is bad but that wasn’t the lesson. Basically I saw this storm from the Palm Beach Inlet, and it was intense. Thinking it was close I chased it all the way to Okeechobee Lake. By that time the storm started to settle, and I was still nowhere close to it! So the lesson here is that lighting, no matter how close it appears, unless you hear thunder, it’s most likely very, very far away.
