Kids Huddling Over Fire, Cold Day in Thailand

Mar 31, 2011 | Portraits & People, Travel & Culture

You might think Thailand during this time of month is hpt, but this year it’s a different story. During the past few days a cold front has swept through the northern and mid parts of Thailand causing the temperature to drop around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. I was hoping it to be cool during my visit but I wasn’t expecting it to be this cold. Heck… I almost got sick because of it, but I’m starting to feel better now ;-) That’s all I need… being sick during a 26 hour flight back home, that would be miserable.

This is how the folks here warm up. Instead of using a furnace or fireplace they burn coal in a small kiln pot. The pot is then put underneath a wooden platform for the kids to sit and play on. In this photo the kids are outside but during nighttime they take the platform inside the house to sleep on. Yes I know this is a recipe for disaster but this is how it’s been done for ages… I’m assuming with little incidence since they’re still doing it now.
