Rob Hanson from robhansonphotography.com writes about Captain Kimo and his eBook.

I first encountered Kim “Captain Kimo” Seng by the recommendation of a mutual friend who said that Kim was freely sharing tips and techniques on his website. Sure enough, on one of my first forays to Kim’s site, I picked up several valuable techniques that I still use regularly.

Since then, I’ve been a steady admirer of Kim’s outstanding HDR work and a frequent visitor to his site. I never walk away empty-handed, as Kim keeps putting his work, his ideas, and his personality ‘out there’ for all to see.

Today’s HDR marketplace is packed full of websites, blogs, and tutorials, and amongst these there are a few people who have risen to luminary status within the community. To get to that level, one has to have solid and consistent output, a steady visible presence, and be willing to share information freely with the rest of us. Kim has all three of those qualities.

This ebook is packed with goodies and information that will be useful to novices and more experienced HDR photographers alike. (I was taking notes while reading it.) Unlike some offerings in the marketplace, this ebook ‘over-delivers’ information relative to its affordable price, and that’s the Captain Kimo I’ve come to know. The tutorials are clear and concise, and the photographs are beautiful. In the book, Kim says that he’s always adapting and innovating, seeking to improve his photography. It’s hard to imagine, but if he does, I’m sure he’ll let us know how it’s done, and that’s a beautiful thing in its own right.

What is Panoramic HDR Photography?

Panoramic HDR Photography combines two photography techniques; panoramic photography and high dynamic range (HDR) photography. This combination is used by photographers to create a HDR photo that will cover a larger image area than what their camera can capture. The process of creating an HDR panorama is done by shooting multiple images of a scene with different exposures and combining them to create one single photo.

Why I Shoot HDR Panoramas.

I shoot Panoramic HDR photos when the composition of my image requires more image area. For instance, the above panoramic was a total of 15 HDR photos for a total of 45 exposures. There was no way that I could have captured this entire scene with one shot.

Being a landscape photographer I use this technique often to photograph vast areas of beaches, mountains and canyons. This is an easy way for me to get more image without having to use my wide angle lens. However, I will also shoot panoramas using my wide angle lens if my image is larger than what I can capture with a single shot.

Below is another example of a panoramic photo I shot to get more image in my photograph. Included is a single shot to show you the difference between shooting and not shooting a pano.

HDR Panoramas Can Be Time Consuming

The only downside of shooting HDR panoramas is that it’s time consuming. Not only are you shooting multiple exposures for HDR, you’re also shooting multiple photos to create your panorama. Post processing your image also takes longer as well, since there are more photos to deal with. Not to mention the extra step required to stitch the images together.

What You’ll Need for Creating HDR Panoramas

You don’t need anything special in terms of hardware. A camera and tripod will do you fine. As for software you’ll need Photomatix (for creating HDR) and Photoshop (for stitching your images together). If you have all these things then creating HDR panoramas will be easy.

Word of Caution When Shooting Panoramic HDR.

Before we begin this tutorial I want everyone to note, photographing panoramas in HDR can be physically intensive on your camera. This is due to the amount of actuation that occurs while shooting. I highly recommend giving your camera a break between long sessions of shooting. This will let your camera cool down and prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

Most HDR photos of people turn out similar to this photo on the right. Notice how blurry the background is because of the depth of field. Blurry and HDR don’t mix well. I’ve experimented with several HDR approach for photographing people, and the traditional approach doesn’t work. People don’t process well in Photomatix. They end up muddy and dirty. That grungy look is cool but not for everything, especially people.

It’s simple really… instead of shooting 3 exposures, I shoot 4.

Software and Plugin Required

Photomatix – software for creating HDR

Portraiture – plugin for touching up portraits

Topaz ReMask – plugin used for masking layers

Photoshop – photo editing program

Step 1 – Merge Landscape Exposures

The first thing we do is merge the three landscape exposures together to create our HDR photo. We do this by using Photomatix. The benefit of separating the subject from the background is that you can go crazy tone mapping without effecting the subject. Below is the final result of our tone mapping from Photomatix.

Step 2 – Processing the Subject

If your subject needs cleaning up, now would be a good time to remove pimples or unwanted blemishes. I use Portraiture to do this because it does a fantastic job while saving me lots of time. Below is a screen capture of my Portraiture window. Left image is the original, right image is the filtered result.

Step 3 – Masking the Subject

Next I begin masking out the background using Topaz ReMask, another time saving plugin! Below is the masking process using ReMask. Please note quality of screen capture program is a little grainy.

Step 4 – Superimposing Subject with HDR Photo

Pretty straight forward process. Take the photo of your subject and place it on top of your HDR landscape. Below is the result from Step 4.

The above image isn’t the final product. There are a few more steps, like applying Topaz Adjust and re-cropping the image, ect… but I won’t get into that. You can read more about that in Chapter 5 of my HDR How-to Guide.

Well that’s it for this tutorial. I hope I was able to shed some light into shooting better HDR portraits. I might eventually do a video on this tutorial so sign-up with FeedBurner and get updated when I do.

When the subject your photographing is a moving car or a flying bird, there’s no way to photograph more than one shot of the same image.

The three photos below is a result of me shooting from within a moving bus. The camera was hand held and the clowns were riding a moving scooter. Not the ideal situation for shooting HDR!

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that if you merge the exposure above, the results won’t be pretty. But just in case you’re the type that needs to see it to believe it, I’ve included it below.

But we can still create a decent HDR image of the photo above. Instead of using all three exposures to create the HDR photo, we’re only going to use one. The exposure we’re going to use is the the over exposed image which I posted below.

The photo above is a perfect candidate for creating a HDR photo. Notice the blown out sky and the extremely dark foreground. HDR will bring back colors in the sky and the details in the foreground.

There are two techniques for creating a
single exposure HDR photograph.

Technique One

Photomatix will allow you to tone map a single RAW file to create a pseudo HDR image. You can do this simply by opening your RAW file in Photomatix. Once your RAW file is open you will be able to tone map your photo into a HDR image like you would normally.

Personally I don’t use this technique because Photomatix doesn’t have any way of separating the light areas from the dark areas. This results in a very flat image with little definition. That’s why I prefer the second technique, which does a much better job of creating a single exposure HDR photograph.

Technique Two

The second technique is my preferred method. I developed this technique because I was unhappy with the results of the first process. This method allows me to tell Photomatix how to separate the light and dark areas. I do this by manually creating my light and dark exposures from the single photo selected above. These exposures are created in Photoshop using the RAW converter. Below is a step-by-step tutorial to show you how to create your exposures.

Step 1 – Opening RAW in Photoshop

When you open your RAW image in Photoshop you get the Camera RAW window. This window will allow you to adjust your exposure. This is how we will be able to create our digital exposures.

Step 2 – Saving Your First Exposure

The first exposure we will create is our standard exposure. Adjust your settings so that this exposure is evenly lit across your entire image. Click on open image once your done adjusting the exposure. Save that file as a TIF file. You should name it EVEN or anything that will remind you that this file is the evenly exposed photo.

Step 3 – Creating Your Under Exposed Image

The second exposure we will create is our under exposure. Adjust your settings so that this exposure is underexposed by 2 stops. Focus on getting any over exposed areas dark with color and detail. Click on open image once your done adjusting the exposure. Save that file as a TIF file. You should name it UNDER or something that will remind you that this file is the under exposure.

Step 4 – Creating Your Over Exposed Image

The third exposure we will create is our over exposure. Adjust your settings so that this exposure is over exposed by 2 stops. Focus on getting detail in your dark areas, mainly the foreground. Click on open image once your done adjusting the exposure. Save that file as a TIF file. You should name it OVER or something that will remind you that this file is the over exposure.

Step 5 – Merging Your Exposures in Photomatix

Once you are done creating your exposures you can use them to create your HDR image in Photomatix. Proceed like you normally would when creating your HDR photo. You will get a new window were you will need to input EV settings. Set them to 2, 0, -2 if you aren’t sure.

Step 6 – Tone Map, Process, Save and You’re Done

Proceed to tone map your image like you normally would. Once you’re satisfied with your tone mapping, process your HDR image, save it and you’re done. Most likely you’ll need to run your image through Topaz DeNoise cause single exposure HDR is notorious for producing grainy images.

Chapter One

of Captain Kimo’s HDR How-to Guide

Welcome to the the first chapter of my HDR guide lets begin by understanding HDR.

What does HDR stand for?

If you think HDR stands for High Definition Resolution… that would be a good assumption. If we were talking about TVs, you probably would have been right. But this site isn’t about TVs it’s about photography, and in photography, HDR stands for High Dynamic Range.

What does High Dynamic Range mean?

Simply put… high dynamic range means more. More of whatever it is you are trying to get, and in photography, more exposure is what photographers are after. Now when I say more exposure I don’t mean more pictures. What I mean is more image in a single photo. To better understand, I’ve posted two photos below.

Standard Photograph

HDR Photograph

I’m sure you noticed the HDR photograph has a lot more detail and color than the standard photograph. This is because the HDR photo is a combination of multiple photos combined. A standard photograph is only one photo, and one photo is limited to a single range of color and detail. If you’re confused, don’t worry. You’ll soon understand what I mean.

How do you create HDR photographs?

HDR photos are made from multiple exposures taken of a single image. Below are the three photos that make up our beautiful beach scene above. Each photo has it’s own range of color and detail.

This is the standard exposure that was shown above which was limited to a range of detail and color. Notice the blown out sky around the sun and the dark areas within the rocks.

This exposure is a darker version of the above photo. But we have more color in the sky and the sun is not blown out like the above image. The clouds also have a lot more definition than the standard photo.

This exposure is much brighter than both the exposures above. The sky is even more blown out. However if you look closely at the rocks you see that there are very few shadows and a lot more detail.

To create the final HDR photograph we will need to merge all three exposure together using HDR Software. I use Photomatix to accomplish this task. Photomatix is the most popular HDR software available.

What are the benefits of HDR ?

Photograph without worrying about exposure

Light and dark subjects can be better defined

Exceed a cameras physical limitation

More image detail and color for processing

What are the disadvantages?

Halos resulting from extreme tonal differences

Ghosting resulting from movement

Banding from color shift in exposures

More work than standard photographs

How long has HDR Photography been around?

HDR Photography has been around since the invention of the camera. The camera has always been physically limited to the range of light it’s capable of capturing. Photographers have always worked around it’s limitation by using filters and combining film exposures. Since the birth of the digital age photographers started creating new solutions to achieve even more dynamic range using technology and software.

Chapter Two

of Captain Kimo’s HDR How-to Guide

In this chapter we will discuss the items you will need to create HDR photographs. You won’t need much… in fact you might already have most of it. Listed below are the three necessary items required.

Camera -can’t have a photograph without it.

Tripod -the key to great HDR photographs.

Software -this will bring it all together.

Camera

You won’t need a expensive camera. But you will need a camera that will allow you to adjust your exposures. Most digital cameras nowadays will allow you to this. However if you adjust your exposure manually you are likely to move your camera and you don’t want any movement. To avoid this you will need a camera that will adjust the exposure automatically. This feature is called AEB or Automatic Exposure Bracketing. AEB will allow you to shoot multiple exposures with a single push of the button.

Tripod

A tripod is needed to keep your camera stationary. The most important part when photographing HDR images is that your camera remains still. There cannot be any movement while you are shooting your exposures. If there is movement it will result in a blurry HDR photograph. A tripod is ideal for keeping your camera motionless.

Software

The last essential piece needed for creating HDR is software. You will need HDR software to merge your exposures together into a single image. There are several HDR software available, some are even free. I’ve tried them all and the one I recommend most is Photomatix. It’s the most popular HDR software of the bunch and for good reason.

Click here to learn more about Photomatix.

Optional

That’s pretty much everything you need to create HDR images. However to get results like mine and complete this tutorial you’ll need a few extra software.

Adobe Photoshop

For all my photo editing I use Adobe Photoshop. This photo editing program has always been the industry standard. I’ve used Adobe Photoshop professionally for over a decade and nothing comes close.

If Adobe Photoshop is out of your budget, you can use Adobe Elements, which is a more affordable alternative to the professional version. Adobe Elements is limited but it will get the job done. Personally I like using Adobe Elements myself. I love the user interface, it’s very simple and clean. If all you need is a basic photo editing program I highly recommend looking into Adobe Elements.

Topaz Photoshop Plugins

Among the many plugins within my Photoshop arsenal, the one I use the most are those created by Topaz Labs. Their Photoshop Bundle is loaded with 7 great plugins and I enjoy using them all. But there are two which I use on all my photos, Topaz Adjust and Topaz DeNoise. These two lpugins will be needed to complete Chapter 5.
You can download the trial version here.

Continue to Chapter 3 – Shooting HDR

The most important part when photographing HDR images is that your camera remains still. There cannot be any movement while you are shooting your exposures. If there is movement it will result in a blurry HDR photograph.

Chapter Three

of Captain Kimo’s HDR How-to Guide

Setting your camera to shoot HDR might seem daunting at first but I assure you it’s painless. Once you’ve done it a few times it becomes second hand. The trick is understanding how to adjust your exposure.

Exposure

Your exposure will allow you to adjust how bright or dark your image is when photographed. Not all cameras will have this option. Check your camera’s user manual to see if this feature is available. Below is a image of what it might look like.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS75

Canon 5D Mark1

Most cameras are similar so you shouldn’t have much of a problem finding this feature. However there are a few cameras that are not so user friendly. If this is the case I recommend doing a Google search for your answer.

Once you’ve figured out how to adjust your exposure, you’re ready to shoot your HDR photo.

Go find yourself a beautiful scenery and capture all it’s splendor. My suggestion is to photograph a car with some clouds and sky in the background. This will make a good test subject because of multiple light sources being projected from different direction.

When you’ve decided what to shoot, you will need to take three pictures like the samples below.

The first image should be a regular shot, don’t worry about adjusting the exposure. The only thing we’re concerned about in this image is that we get an even amount of light.

The second image should be darker than the first so adjust your exposure to make it darker. Get it as dark as possible to bring out the rich colors in the bright areas of the photo.

The third image should be brighter than the first two so adjust your exposure to make it brighter. This exposure will focus on the foreground image and any details in the dark areas.

Once you’re done, proceed to the next chapter to combine your exposure into one single HDR image using Photomatix.

It’s time to create our HDR photo using the exposures taken from Chapter 3. We create our HDR photo by combining the exposures togther and to do this we’ll need HDR software. The software I use is called Photomatix. Click here to learn more about Photomatix.

Photomatix Video and Step-by-Step Instructions

Using Photomatix to create you’re HDR image is quite simple. Below is video that will guide you through it.

Step 1 – Photomatix Guide

Learn to enhance your HDR images using Topaz Adjust and Topaz DeNoise. This is the 5th and final chapter to my HDR How-to Guide.

Chapter Five

of Captain Kimo’s HDR How-to Guide

You’ve made it to the last chapter of my HDR How-to Guide. In this chapter we will enhance our HDR image using Topaz Adjust. We will also be using Topaz Denoise to remove any noise created during this process. Using Topaz Adjust and Topaz DeNoise is easy enough but there are some tricks to getting the most out of it. Below is a video on how I use Topaz Adjust to put the dynamic in high dynamic range. I also included step-by-step instructions to help guide you through this process. Click here to learn more about Topaz Software.

Topaz Video & Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 – Create Multiply Layer

Launch up Photoshop and get your HDR image opened. The first thing we’re gonna do is create a duplicate of the original background layer. Rename this new layer multiply. Set the transparency setting to multiply and the opacity to 40%.

Step 2 – Apply Topaz Adjust – Mild Color Pop

Keep your multiply layer selected and apply the Topaz Adjust filter to that layer using the preset Mild Color Pop. Click the OK button to apply the filter to the layer.

Step 3 – Create Overlay Layer

Duplicate the original background layer again and name this layer overlay. Change the transparency to overlay and the opacity to 20%.

Step 4 – Apply Topaz Adjust – Neutralizer by JorgeDiaz

Keep your overlay layer selected and apply the Topaz Adjust filter to that layer using the preset Neutralizer by JorgeDiaz. Click the OK button to apply the filter to the layer.

Step 5 – Merge Layers

Duplicate the background layer once again and merge that layer with the multiply layer and the overlay layer.

Step 6 – Apply Topaz DeNoise

This is the last step. Select the merged layer and go to Filter and launch Topaz Denoise. Select the preset JPEG_HQ. Click the OK button to apply the Filter.

Don’t stop here. If your image needs more processing keep going till you’re happy with the result!

Final Enhanced HDR Photograph

Below is the final result of the Enhanced HDR image. I’ve included the original HDR image as well for reference. Now you can see why Topaz Adjust is one of my favorite tools as a digital photographer.
